The priests were held responsible to keep the fire on the altar burning …  ready from day to day to offer sacrifices. It was one of their main duties.

The altar speaks to us of prayer and praise which are to be kept burning. Continual prayer and praise are the responsibilities we have as New Testament priests before the Lord.

By him therefore let us offer the sacrifice of praise to God continually, that is, the fruit of our lips giving thanks to his name.  [Heb. 13:15]
