God will provide

Gen. 22

One of the most famous passages in the Bible is the story of Abraham offering his son of promise on an altar. This lesson shows the faith of Abraham … that God could raise his son from death of need be.

When we find ourselves in tight financial places after we’ve been obedient to God’s will, He WILL make a way, even a miraculous way. God hereby introduced Himself as Jehovah-Jireh, the God that provides.

(God provided a ram caught in a bush for Abraham to sacrifice)

Don’t look back

Gen. 19

After having been instructed by God’s angels to not look back at the wicked city Sodom, Lots’ wife disobeyed and turned to see what was happening. She was immediately turned into a pillar of salt.

The Christian life is always about obedient progress, leaving behind the former things and way of life. Maybe she was too attached to her home. Regardless. she demonstrated a lack of faith in God to bring her into His provision and a new start for her family.

The outcry of sin

Gen. 17

God heard the sin of Sodom as an outcry. He knew He must do something about it. So He took two angels and went to destroy the city.

Sodomy is the sin of homosexuality. It still has an outcry that is offensive to God. He loves the sinner but hates the sin.

Heavenly Father, help us to love the sinner like you do.

Our goal – be blameless

Gen. 17

God challenged Abraham to live a blameless life. We can’t expect to be Christ’s witnesses if our life contradicts our message.

Jesus said, “Apart from Me you can do NOTHING.” Any purity of life we may attain can only come by God’s grace expressed by Christ’s sacrifice. It’s by grace through faith that we are saved.

How many stars are there?

Gen. 14

God told Abraham, “Look up into the sky at night. Count the stars. THAT’S how many descendants you will have.” Interesting, because at that point, Abraham was childless.

The answer: their number is virtually limitless. God can make a nation from nothing.

In your personal situation, you may see no solutions. God can bring limitless solutions. Have faith and wait, trusting.

Abraham, the liar

Gen. 13

Because he feared for his life, Abraham told Pharaoh that Sarah was his sister. He knew Pharaoh would want her because of her beauty and maybe eliminate Abraham to have her for himself. Abraham did not account for God’s protection because the Lord put plagues upon Pharaoh for trying to take another man’s wife.

Several things here:

  • God will protect your marriage
  • Honesty is the best policy
  • Even your enemy can get the message … just stay on your knees and trust God

Abraham heard God’s voice

Gen.11

God told Abraham to take his family to a new land that God would show him. This was a consequential decision and a BIG move.

How do you know you’ve heard from God? YOU’LL KNOW!

Early in our marriage, God spoke to me about changing all my plans and moving to Findlay, Ohio. That move put us on the right track for the rest of our lives.

God always knows what’s best for your family.

Long livers

Gen. 9

Can you imagine being over 900 years old? NOT ME!

I suppose the absence of sugar and food preservatives could prolong our days … I’m only 76 and some days get painful. I thank God for Aleve. Better judgement is one of the benefits of a long life. We have helpful insights to share with the younger generation.

Old folks, share on. Old’s cool.

Call on The Name (of the Lord)

Grn 4

Men began to call.on the name of the Lord. They discovered that He’s as close as the mention of His name. Obviously He’s ALWAYS LISTENING. You don’t have to phone or text Him.

It’s a g ood thing Jesus said, “Lazarus, come forth.” If He hadn’t, every dead person in the grave would have arisen.

Use His name, “Jesus.”

Sin – you must rule over it

Genesis 1-4

God told Cain that he must rule over sin. This advice applies to us all. Eve and Adam both set a poor example by disobeying God’s command to avoid the fruit from a forbidden tree. One illicit bite changed the course of humanity.

What sin is pulling on you? Rule over it. Tune your ears to God’s voice, not the serpent’s.
